Once upon a time
Pandora,
the all-giving goddess,
was denounced and devalued,
reduced to humanity
    a myth invented by
wary, jealous, bitter gods and men
tied to the age of patriarchy.

She is reviled in history
as a hapless harbinger of evil
    for
opening a gift of Zeus,
a prettily painted cursed jar,
(there never was a box)
filled with wickedness.

The strange mysteries the jar contained
swirled and twirled and begged
no longer wishing to be restrained.
Their call was strong,
   her curiosity clear;
she opened the gift from the Olympian.
in a hush heard by eternity
she ushered in a doom-filled ill wind
for all of mankind.

The Greeks maligned her essence and
blamed her for much:
strife
sickness
sorrow
death
damage
and
deceit

and more.

The years have followed suit,
drowning her spirit of creating, giving and love
in negative energy millennia old.
I have deliberately not touched on the "hope" issue that is related to Pandora, in the content of this poem.

There is debate about this issue.
Logically people ask the question, why was "hope" included in a jar of evils for mankind? Was this part added to the legend at a later time? Were there two jars? Why would hope be "left" in the jar anyway? Why wouldn't she "let it out?"
Like I said, there is a lot of debate on this issue.

My two cents, worth less and I am not certain completely believed by even me, is this: hope can be construed by some as evil.
Before you get all...pissy...just imagine, remember, how you felt lost in the void of no hope, the moments when you felt utterly "hopeless."
I remember the moments, holding death in my arms and weeping. I can't bring babies back to life. That is hopeless.
So. You can see where I am going with this? We have some measure of hope until it is either grown or stolen. The essence of hope...good or bad? positive or negative?
It is a worthy debate...can hope be seen as an evil visited upon man?

Very deep indeed, one of your best, I'd say.
